Lymphedema occurs in both humans and animals. Just like humans, lymphedema can begin in one or all four limbs of a dog.
What is lymphedema? A collection of lymph fluid causes lymphedema in specific tissues in the body due to obstructions in the lymphatic system (lymph nodes, vessels, and organs.) Lymphedema may be from a chronic illness (born with it- primary lymphedema) or an acute condition such as an injury (secondary lymphedema)
Causes of lymphedema in dogs:
- Certain breeds
- Injury
- Burns
- Tumors
- Infections
- Heart disorders
- Compromise liver function
Diagnosis of Lymphedema in Dogs: Just like humans, dogs receive the diagnosis through a series of diagnostic tests, such as blood count, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), urinalysis, packed cell volume (PCV), liver panel, heartworm test, and an analysis of the fluid from the affected area. A lymphangiography will is done by injecting dye into the lymph nodes before x-rays are performed.
Treatment of Lymphedema in Dogs:
- Compression
- Movement
- Water Therapy
- Medication
